AMD has already gained over 30% of the x86 processor market, Intel is falling

Analytics company Mercury Research released its 2022 processor market report and the results are noticeably worse than in 2021. They say that a total of 374 million processors were shipped, which is a 21% decrease from 2021. The market value also decreased, by 19% to $65 billion. Although these are strong declines, it must be said here that the years 2020 and 2021 were very strong in terms of sales, and despite significant falls, this is the third best result in history.

He can celebrate here AMD, which is still the number two processor, but is growing compared to Intel. For the 4th quarter of last year (Q4/22) it reached 31.3% market share, while in the last quarter (Q3/22) it was 28.5% and a year ago (Q4/21) it was only 25.6%. It improved by 5.7 percentage points. Intel, by analogy, got the rest, i.e. 68.7% for the last quarter. A quarter of a year earlier it was 71.5%, and a year earlier it was 74.4%.

However, if we take only the server segment, Intel’s dominance is more pronounced here, and over the past quarter of a year, according to Mercury Research, its market share has only imperceptibly decreased from 82.5% to 82.4%. But it is worth noting here the fact that a year ago Intel still had 89.3%, so from this point of view it really dropped quite a lot year-on-year, especially if we take into account the fact that it is a relatively conservative server processor market. However, AMD is still a small player with a 17.6% share.

The statistics also include a comparison of x86 vs. ARM architectures (e.g. in Apple M1 and M2 processors or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors for computers). Here, ARM has slightly worsened compared to last quarter from 14.6% to 13.3%, but it is a considerable increase from 10.3% year-on-year.
