AMD and NVIDIA promise to take measures to combat the shortage of graphics cards

January became a convenient milestone for an interim analysis of the actions taken by AMD and NVIDIA to combat the shortage of video cards and high prices for them. If the former will increase the production of reference video cards, the latter will try to saturate the miners with new batches of boards without graphics ports. Both companies do not guarantee it will get any easier this quarter.

Site representatives The Verge managed to find out about AMD’s initiative to increase the release of reference versions of the Radeon RX 6900 XT ($ 999), Radeon RX 6800 XT ($ 649) and Radeon RX 6700 XT ($ 579). In order to somehow keep prices down, the company will actively sell these video cards through its own online stores in the regions of its presence.

Representatives AnandTech managed to take from the head of AMD Lisa Su (Lisa Su) the traditional interview for CES, in which she touched on the topic of pricing policy for video cards. The company is trying to keep prices for reference products of the Radeon RX 6000 series by selling them directly through its online store, and it invites partners to follow this example.

If we talk about the possible impact of customs tariffs, which increased for the United States in the coming year, the head of AMD does not consider them the only factor contributing to the rise in prices for video cards. According to Lisa Su, logistics costs have also increased in the context of the pandemic, and the retail price of new models of video cards that AMD expects to release in the first half of the year will also depend on the epidemiological situation in the world.

NVIDIA was able to provide a more detailed commentary on this topic as CFO Colette Kress spoke at the virtual event JP Morgan. First, she recalled that video cards of the GeForce RTX 30 series, which cost from $ 499, are sold twice as actively compared to their predecessors at a similar stage of the life cycle. Secondly, she added that there are no signs of total purchase of gaming video cards by miners so far. To the latter, the company will be able, if necessary, to offer traditional versions of video cards without ports for displaying images and a curtailed warranty. Their release, of course, entails significant risks for the company and partners, because if the cryptocurrency boom stops, it will be difficult to sell such products.

The CFO of NVIDIA admitted that until the end of the first fiscal quarter, which in the company’s calendar will last until April inclusive, it makes little sense to expect an improvement in the availability of video cards. In a word, the video card market continues to suffer from a combination of unfavorable factors, the influence of which cannot be ruled out in the coming months.
