MEXICO CITY (AP) – Ignacio Ambriz, the coach who just a couple of weeks ago won the Mexican soccer title with León, was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19 and developing pneumonia, the club reported Friday.
“Our coach is stable and under medical observation, evolving in a favorable way,” reported the whole of central Mexico through a brief statement on their official Twitter account.
Just on December 13, León defeated Pumas 2-0 in the second leg of the final to be crowned in the Apertura tournament. The Leonese team collected 40 points in the regular season, three less than the record in short tournaments.
Ambriz, 55, had never won a Mexican league title as a coach. Instead, he was crowned twice with Necaxa during his playing career.
The midfielder was captain of the Mexican team in the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
As a coach, he has directed Puebla, San Luis, Guadalajara, Querétaro, América and Necaxa. He took the reins of León in 2018.
