“Amber Volley” volleyball players defeated the champions in the first quarter-final match of the Baltic League

The Amber Volley team from Gargžda took a solid first step towards the final four of the Cronimet Baltic Men’s Volleyball Championship.

In the first match of the quarter-finals on Thursday, the Amber Volley volleyball players defeated the defending champion Estonian title team Tartu Bigbank 3-1 (25:13, 25:22, 24:26, 25:19) at home.

In the regular season, the players from Gargždi, coached by the Latvian Austris Stals, were sixth, and the Tartu club was third.

The “Amber Volley” team, supported by a lot of spectators, simply dominated the first set, and in the second, although it was a bit more difficult, they also proved their superiority. In the third set, “Amber Volley” played the end unsuccessfully and the rivals returned the intrigue to the match. However, in the fourth set, the hosts showed that they are well prepared for this series and ended the match with a nice victory.

Matheus Veloso scored 23 points for the winners, Andrejus Čmirovas, Artūras Vincėlovičius and Linas Starkutis scored 12 each.

Daniel Matheney was the most productive player in the Estonian club with 21 points.

“It is very nice that we won and with a good result. We earned three points, which is very important. However, it is understandable that away from home the opponents will be even stronger and we have only done half the work. We are happy that we received a lot of support from fans. When there are many spectators, you want to play even more, and the players gain additional energy, especially in difficult moments,” said Sergejus Šchegolis, assistant coach of Amber Volley.

The captain of the Gargžda team, Ukrainian Dmitriy Shlomin, also thanked the spectators: “I didn’t even expect such support – people applauded and supported the whole match. Emotions are very good. We really wanted to win at home. We have done the first half of the work. We will go to Estonia, where the players of the starting six will return to the opponents. It will be a tough fight, but we hope to reach the semi-finals.”

The second leg will be played on Sunday at 16:00. Tartu. If the Estonian team wins 3-0 or 3-1, then the golden set will be played immediately. All other results would favor the Gargžda team.

In the other first match of the quarter-finals, “Parnu VK” (Estonia) beat “Ezerzeme-DU” (Latvia) of Daugavpils 3-2 away, “Selver-TalTech” (Estonia) of Tallinn beat “RTU-Robežsardze-Jūrmala” (Latvia) 3-0 away from Riga ) team, and the volleyball players of “SK Jėkabpils Lūši” (Latvia) proved their superiority against the club “Barrus Voru VK” (Estonia) 3-1 at home.

The final four of the Baltic Men’s Volleyball Championship will take place on March 1-2 in Tallinn.
