Amber Heard is facing a new legal battle, but this time with an insurance company with which she has a contract, DPA reported.
New York Marine & General Insurance is asking a California court to rule on whether it should pay out on the actress’ policy after she failed to defend herself and lost a defamation lawsuit filed by her ex-husband Johnny Depp.
The insurance policy concluded in 2019 provides the actress with liability protection for up to one million US dollars.
The company is of the opinion that it has no obligations to the actress and refers to California insurance law. According to the provision cited in the claim, “the insurer is not liable for loss caused by the insured’s intentional action.”
New York Marine & General Insurance also states that “the jury’s findings of fact establish … intentional acts by Heard.”
A spokesperson for the actress could not be reached for comment.
This is the latest legal challenge for Amber Heard. She faces him just over a month after the legal saga with her ex-husband Johnny Depp ended.
In 2019, he sued for $50 million in damages after the actress wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post in which she portrayed herself as a public figure who was a victim of domestic violence, a theme widely covered by the publication. It does not mention Depp’s name, but he believes the article indirectly defames him.
The trial, which lasted six weeks, exposed details of the private lives of Hollywood actors. Heard claimed she was sexually abused by Depp during their marriage. He categorically denied.
According to the jury’s decision, Johnny Depp should receive just over $10 million from his ex-wife.
The actress announced that she plans to appeal.
