The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard court saga is becoming more and more complicated after it became clear yesterday that the actress lied under oath for a donation. Depp is currently suing his ex-wife for defamation in an essay in which she describes him as a rapist, although he does not mention his name, BNT reported.
After their divorce in 2016, Depp paid Hurd $ 7 million in damages. She said she would donate the money to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. Since then, she has claimed several times, including under oath in an English court in 2020, that she donated the full amount to both organizations.
However, yesterday in Fairfax, Virginia, Amber Heard was cross-examined by Johnny Depp’s lawyer as to whether she really donated the money. The first few times the actress diverts the question, but finally says, “Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to donate them. I promised to donate everything, but I haven’t done it yet because Johnny is suing me.”
It turns out that in 2018, 1.3 million dollars were paid to ACLU on behalf of Hurd, and only 350 thousand are directly from it. Two other contributions are from Johnny Depp (100 thousand) and from an account attributed to Elon Musk (500 thousand). This is clear both from documents submitted by Depp’s legal team and from the testimony of ACLU Director Terence Doherty.
It is unclear whether Amber Heard will suffer the consequences, as she lied during a trial in London. Under English law, perjury is punishable by a fine, probation or up to 7 years in prison.
