Amber Brantsen goes into labor two weeks before her due date. Although she would like to give birth at home, she still has to go to the hospital because the contractions are not continuing. “Amber immediately received an epidural. With a device she was allowed to administer and dose her own pain relief, a nice, new feature at the time,” says Rachid. That seems to work well at first.
24 hours after the first contractions, Amber starts to experience a lot of pain. “Both the gynecologist in training and an anesthetist came to have a look, but said: ‘Nothing is wrong.’ They didn’t believe Amber; it was like she was showing off.” Many hours and a lot of misunderstanding from the hospital later, their child is born.
Later it becomes clear why Amber suffered so much pain. “In the morning, a sweet nurse found a puddle of fluid on the floor. It turned out: the epidural had not been properly connected due to a loose tube. A gigantic blunder.” The couple does not receive an apology, something that still bothers Rachid.
“I will soon receive EMDR therapy, just before our second child arrives. Amber overcame something that day by giving birth to a child, despite all the setbacks. I could only watch helplessly as someone I love dearly had to suffer pain. .”
Amber and Rachid are expecting their second child. The presenter is now on maternity leave and will no longer be seen in the broadcasts on Viaplay until the new Formula 1 season.
