Amber and Euro: The New Edition of Kulturkorrespondenz Eastern Europe Delves into the Origins and Stories of Money

The new cultural correspondence has been published!

If you’re lucky, it will wash up from the Baltic Sea after thunderstorms and stormy nights. It is now also mined industrially. In the professional world it is called succinite and is a fossil resin.

We’re talking about amber. In the Middle Ages it was known not only as jewelry but also as a means of payment and today its value is not far from the price of gold, sometimes at 60 euros per gram. The current issue of Kulturkorrespondenz Eastern Europe is not about natural resources, but rather about means of payment: From thalers to pen ounces – stories about money is the name of the new edition, because the euro was introduced as book money 25 years ago. It is now a means of payment in twenty countries, making it the second most used currency in the world.

The most important means of payment is the US dollar and it has its origins in the thaler, an important silver coin from the early modern period to the 19th century. Their birthplace is in Sankt Joachimsthal/Jáchymov in West Bohemia, where KK editor Renate Zöller went. The origins of money are also discussed in the interview with politics professor Stefan Eich (Georgetown University – Washington, DC), who recently published a book on the subject. Dawid Smolorz from Upper Silesia describes a special form of payment means, namely emergency money. The period surrounding the First World War is also discussed in the article by KK editor Markus Nowak. He focuses on East Prussia aid, a kind of first major “fundraising campaign”.

For students and trainees, the e-journal is available for FREE with an annual subscription!
