Amazon’s second Prime Day: preview or latest blaze?

Black Friday falls very early this year: at Amazon it is already running a two day and rival deal Walmart it also offers exceptional discounts for three days. A taste of what’s to come or are they rushing before wallets close?

$ 4.1 billion in two days

Amazon is doing its July Prime Day neatly this week. Today and yesterday continue the “Prime Early Access Sale”, a two-day party with exclusive discounts and new product launches for Amazon Prime members. In this way, the online retailer wants to help consumers better disseminate their end-of-year purchases. In other words: let people spend money now, before they run out later.

The second Prime Day is possible Raising of $ 4.1 billion, estimates Jefferies according to the Financial Times. A welcome extra as Amazon sees online sales decline after peaks during the corona pandemic. While that’s well below the estimated $ 12 billion in sales on this year’s first Amazon Prime Day, that would have been the best ever.

The other retailers cannot be left behind. Bol.com launches this week with “lots of selected offers” for those who take a paid subscription, while in the US the archrival Walmart from 10 to 13 October at “Rollbacks and More” –discount promotion for non-food products. Objective then take advantage of Thanksgiving with offerings between October 6-8.

Black Friday or Skinny Friday?

Is there anything to expect from Black Friday at the end of November? Less and less, concludes an American study. The shopping holiday has been established much longer and more forcefully than in Europe, but now it appears to be in decline. Aside from current inflationary pressures and recession fears, Black Friday they contribute less to annual turnover each year from participating retailers. In 2019, retailers averaged 9% of their sales over the sales period, in 2020 only 5.82% and in 2021 it was 5.18%.

Although the figures of recent years may have been skewed by the corona pandemic, the fact that consumers gradually want to consume in a more sustainable and conscious way, while there are already so many discount promotions at other times. Those who buy on Black Friday, therefore, would be first and foremost real bargain hunters and not regular customers.

There will be further pressure on purchasing power this year. The British supermarket giant Tesco already announced that they expect a different Christmas than usual: people will probably buy fewer packages and make it cheap at home instead of celebrating at the restaurant. The same sound was heard at Walmart. All the more reason to get what there is to eat now.
