Amazon is already doing the same in several EU countries with “Amazon Logistics”: build a small warehouse near a large city with infrastructure (port, rail, airport) and from there take care of the delivery of orders using independent couriers (“Amazon Flex”).
Those couriers can try to get a “lock” to pick up packages from Amazon and receive instructions through an app where to go. Video about the app here.
For more remote areas they then work with several delivery companies, some local companies, some national or international. in Spain they use eg UPS, DHL, Correos Express, Correos, FedEx, SEUR (DPD), MRW, Nacex, and a few others. Depending on where you live or how big/heavy the package is, the courier will come with the lowest price.
If Bpost is too expensive, PostNL, DPD, … will probably want to be a bit cheaper, and so they price themselves out of the market. Race to the bottom and the winner is the consumer. Amazon.
