Amazon towards the layoff of 18,000 people worldwide: “Changes to pursue long-term opportunities”

Amazonia strong confirmation cuts to staff: the group will leave at home 18,000 people worldwide. It is about the strongest wave of layoffs in the history of the Seattle company, affecting only 1.5% of the workforce. Above all, the workers of the physical stores belonging to Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go and the People Experience and Technology Solutions division will be involved. In a communication to the employees the managing director Andy Jassy says the decision was not taken lightly. “We work to support those affected by offering packages which include a payment, health benefits and support” to find a job, reads the email. Jassy then observes how “Amazon has sailed an uncertain and difficult economy in the past and will continue to do so. These changes will help us pursue long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure.”

Cuts are also coming for the software maker Salesforcewhich will reduce its workforce by about 10% (8 thousand people). Headcount grew too much in the run-up to the economic crisis, according to the company, and needs to be scaled back now that consumers are reviewing their spending habits and “taking a more measured approach to their purchasing decisions.” The restructuring of the workforce, according to the company’s plans, should be completed by the end of fiscal year 2024, as emerges from an information note filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (US Consob). The plan also calls for a reduction in real estate holdings to be completed by 2026.
