Amazon switches off Prime Video’s free Freevee channel

The free Freevee channel, which is part of Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video, will soon be switched off reported the US entertainment magazine Variety. We summarize the details below.

Still free content

Freevee is expected to be shut down “within the next few weeks” in all markets where the channel has launched. In addition to the United States, these include Germany and Austria, among others.

The content, which also includes in-house productions, will be migrated to the regular Prime Video program, but will remain available free of charge. Non-Prime customers can then recognize these titles by the “Watch for Free” label.

An Amazon spokesperson justified the decision as follows: »To provide our customers with an easier viewing experience, we have decided to phase out the Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available to Prime members, and non-Prime members will continue to have access to a wide range of free content.

It is currently still unclear whether the anime series and films available on Freevee can still be streamed for free on Prime Video. In Germany it is Channel itself is no longer available, while the individual anime titles continue to be listed with a Freevee label.
