Amazon sent ‘accidental’ call to remove TikTok for safety

Within a few hours, Amazon has revoked a previously announced ban on the social media app TikTok among staff. The company said the call was accidentally sent.

The news that the tech giant announced a ban on the Chinese app became big news in a short time, especially in the United States. There, mistrust towards TikTok has recently grown.

The US government hinted at a ban last week. The White House is concerned with the handling of the Chinese parent company with the data of the users that are stored. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo strongly advised Americans not to download some Chinese apps unless they “want their personal information to fall into the hands of the Communist Party.” In December, the US military already reported that personnel had to remove the app from government phones.

TikTok is a popular app among young people that allows you to create and share short music videos. There are also many privacy concerns around the platform. European Union privacy regulators recently opened an investigation into the app, which is owned by the Chinese ByteDance. TikTok fined U.S. market watchdog FTC last year for a $ 5.7 million fine for tracking against the rules in personal data of children under 13.

“Mistake”

“This morning’s email to some of our employees was mistakenly sent. Our policy regarding TikTok has not changed,” reports Amazon. The sent notice said there were concerns about the security of the app. In a response, TikTok stated that it would do everything to safeguard the privacy of users.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority started an investigation in our country last May to the app. The regulator wants to know whether the privacy of users is properly guaranteed. The first results of the investigation by the Dutch Data Protection Authority will probably be announced later this year.
