Amazon Prime Video is finally bringing the new “Supernatural” series to Germany today – but don’t get excited too soon!

The “Supernatural” spin-off “The Winchesters” celebrated its premiere in the USA over a year ago, but only now is the German premiere of the prequel to the fantasy hit – which was canceled after just one season.

“Supernatural” was an absolute long-running hit. The fantasy series about the demon-hunting brothers Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) ran for an impressive 15 seasons with a total of 327 episodes between 2005 and 2020. No wonder they wanted to build on this success and expand the supernatural series world created by “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke with spin-offs. But such projects have failed several times over the years.

After the planned spin-offs “Supernatural: Bloodlines” (about a hunter who takes on shapeshifter and werewolf families in Chicago) and “Supernatural: Wayward Sisters” (about Sheriff Jody Mills) were both canceled, the prequel “The Winchesters” was at least “ but then actually produced. In the USA, the result could already be seen from October 2022 to March 2023.

Now the time has come in this country too: Starting today, November 17, 2023, the “Supernatural” prequel “The Winchesters” can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. All 13 episodes of the first season are available directly – but this will remain the only one.

Over after just one season

The plan to create a legitimate “Supernatural” successor didn’t work out in the case of “The Winchesters” either. Despite the involvement of “Dean” Jensen Ackles, who not only produced the series but also acts as a narrator, the project was canceled after just one season. Efforts to place it on another channel came to nothing.

And so we are now only partially told how Dean and Sam’s parents Mary (Meg Donnelly) and John (Drake Rodger) met and fell in love in the 70s and – like their sons later – went monster hunting together, to find their missing fathers.

In the end, the early end of the series may have something good, after all, it threatened to drive a wedge (at least temporarily) between the Winchester brothers Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki when it turned out that the latter knew nothing about the project at all The former was directly involved in its development. This dispute has now been resolved. And the many “Supernatural” fans still have the main series, which is currently the same with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video* gives.
