E-commerce giant Amazon plans to open up to 55,000 job vacancies. Job vacancies are opened globally. This was conveyed by Amazon’s Chief Executive, Andy Jassy.
Jassy revealed that the company opened job vacancies to improve the company’s performance in the retail business, cloud, advertising, and several other business lines. He hopes this will help people who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
“There were so many workers during the pandemic that had to be cut, and there were so many people thinking about different and new jobs,” Jassy said, quoted by Reuters on Thursday (2/8/2021).
“This is part of what we think makes ‘Career Day’ timed and very useful,” he added.
Salaries are offered for a number of jobs ranging from US$ 15, equivalent to Rp. 231,750 (exchange rate of Rp. 14,250) to US$ 17 or Rp. 242,250 per hour. Jassy revealed that the value is the minimum salary that his employees get.
“The minimum wage for employees is $15/hour and in some states the average starting salary is $17 per hour,” explains Jassy.
Assuming an average of 8 hours of work per day and 25 days per month, the workers can earn Rp. 1.9 million/day or Rp. 48.45 million/month.
He explained that the addition of 55,000 new workers will increase by 20% of Amazon’s technology and enterprise staff, which currently number around 275,000 globally.
The addition of tens of thousands of employees is also of particular concern to the US union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Considering that Amazon is a company that is always exposed to news that it provides excessive working hours in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When asked how the company can change the workplace culture, Amazon called it pressuring workers. Jassy ensures that he will continue to make improvements.
“Everyone in the company has freedom, going forward we look critically at how it can be better and then find ways to make it better,” he explained.
As for the work positions that will be opened by Amazon, ranging from vacancies for engineering, research science and robotics positions, according to the newly opened positions. Later there will be several more positions.
Of the more than 55,000 vacancies opened, more than 40,000 will be placed in the United States. Meanwhile, the rest will be in countries such as India, Germany, and Japan.
Amazon itself is the second largest private company in the United States. Amazon employed more than 500,000 people in 2020, most of its workers working in warehouse and shipping operations.
