Amazon Madness on Prime Day | The time

The two-day Amazon Prime Day bargain festival should yield two-thirds more this year than in 2019.

Tech giant Amazon closed its two-day Prime Day discount party on Wednesday evening. Initially, the event was supposed to take place in the summer, but the American web giant had to look for another date due to the corona crisis.

Last year, the buying frenzy accounted for a total revenue of $ 6 billion ($ 5.1 billion), two-thirds of which in the United States and the rest ($ 2 billion) outside. This year, the total revenue – supported by the strong growth of e-commerce since the start of the corona crisis – is expected to reach no less than $ 9.9 billion. That is what the research agency eMarketer expects.

With the festival, Amazon is putting its Prime membership in the spotlight. This subscription formula gives access to free delivery within 24 hours, all kinds of services such as the video streaming platform Prime Video and therefore also the discounts of Prime Day.

The Prime formula saw the light of day in the United States in 2005. Worldwide there are already more than 150 million Prime members, 112 million of which are in Amazon’s US home market. In comparison, the music service Spotify has 138 million subscribers worldwide. Belgians can also become Prime members since November 2017. It is unknown how many compatriots have such a subscription three years later.
