Amazon lays off more than 18,000 workers

The company is evaluating the possibility of communicating the cuts starting from 18 January

MADRID/OVIEDO, 5 (PRESS EUROPE)

Amazon executive director Andy Jassy has announced it will lay off more than 18,000 workers, increasing the number the company reportedly estimated according to information released late last year.

The CEO of Amazon confirmed this information this Wednesday, which confirms the information previously published by the “Wall Street Journal” newspaper.

“We normally wait to communicate these findings once we’ve been able to speak to the people directly affected. However, as one of our teammates leaked this information externally, we decided it was best to share this news sooner.” so they can learn the details straight from my mouth,” Jassy explained.

“We intend to communicate with affected employees (or, where appropriate in Europe, with employee representative bodies) from 18 January,” he added, as stated in a statement.

However, Jassy was keen to point out that the company has overcome uncertain economic difficulties in the past. “These changes will help us pursue our long-term opportunities with a more robust cost structure,” she said.

“I’m also optimistic and believe we’re going to be resourceful and creative and nimble in this time where we’re not expansive hiring and shedding some functions,” he said, before noting that “companies that last a long time go through different phases.”

US e-commerce giant Amazon was considering job cuts in November among its corporate and tech workforce of up to 10,000, according to The New York Times, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans.

The company closed the first nine months of 2022 with a loss of 3,000 million dollars (2,900 million euros), compared with a profit of 19,041 million (18,408 million euros) in the period January-September 2021. For its part, turnover was 172,370 million (166,642 million euros), 1.2 percent more.
