Amazon is starting a new industry focused on offering its own movies and series for rent or purchase on other streaming services or on airplanes. Licenses to the productions can also be sold to non-US TV channels. The company made that Monday evening known. In many cases it will be the first time that the well-known Amazon titles are released on the ‘open market’.
Borat and James Bond
The new division, Amazon MGM Studios Distribution, has a library of over 4,000 films and 17,000 TV episodes, including Amazon Studios productions such as Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Hunters, 7500, All The Old Knives and Goliath. After these ‘originals’ are shown exclusively on Amazon Prime Video for the first period, they will be offered on other channels.
The department also sells films from popular series such as James Bond, Rocky, Fargo, Vikings and The Handmaid’s Tale. Last year, Amazon took over MGM, the home of James Bond, for $8.5 billion.
Tailor-made packages
Other media companies that have their own streaming services, such as Warner Bros. Discovery, have said they will more often license their own productions to third parties in order to generate additional revenue.
According to Amazon CEO Chris Ottinger, “flexible bundles” are offered, whereby the purchasing companies, such as streaming services or TV parties, can choose from the films and series themselves. “We are breaking the current mold of sales by offering tailor-made packages that meet the individual needs of our customers,” says Ottinger against deadline.
At the end of last year, Amazon already made 1 billion dollars free for the production of films that will also be shown in cinemas.
