Amazon Kindle e-readers will get support for EPUB files by the end of 2022 – Tablets and Phones – News

This is possible not al. And even for the last few years.

You can rename an .epub to .png and then mail it to your kindle address and it will convert nicely. If you name it as .epub you will get a message that this format is not supported but if you sneak it through with another extension it works for years Basically, the platform just supports it but they didn’t want to support it, perhaps for commercial reasons. This trick has been working for at least 4 or 5 years.

By the way, I haven’t tried DRMed epubs but I have a bunch of epubs in my library that I converted that way. You can also convert with Caliber, but Amazon’s converter works fine, so I always use it. I don’t like Caliber. It can be done a lot, but I find the UI unclear and I often have strange things with conversions such as too large line spacing. Undoubtedly fine to solve somewhere in the settings, but I find it so cluttered.

It’s strange that it has to take until the end of this year to turn off that block on *.epub :? And are ePubs with DRM also supported?

So I have the feeling that this has more to do with the .mobi phasing out that they are now reluctantly starting to support epub, than that there is real work needed to implement and test this. Amazon has always had a kind of “not invented here” hatred of EPUB, unfortunately. I assume for commercial reasons, they don’t want to make it too easy outside of Amazon to buy books I think.
