Amazon is working on a standalone sports content app

Amazon is working on a standalone app for watching sports content, gadgets360.com reported Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.

Sports continue to be a major attraction to watch as American audiences increasingly switch from pay-TV subscriptions to streaming apps.

The move is likely to complement Amazon’s efforts to double down on sports programming with Prime Video, a key channel for attracting consumers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already owns the rights to broadcast games, including the National Football League soccer franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK, making it better able to compete with major sports broadcaster Walt Disney.

Also last week, Alphabet’s YouTube unit signed a multi-year deal to stream the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package exclusively in the United States.

According to the report, it was unclear when Amazon would release the sports app and whether it would go ahead with the plan.

The company is overhauling unprofitable business units and has laid off some employees to cover rising costs and falling demand as inflation-wary consumers and businesses spend less.
