Amazon buys an encrypted messenger service. Before making the purchase, the cloud computing provider discussed whether to buy the Messenger Signal. Ultimately, the decision was made to buy Wickr – which is similar to Signal.
The retail giant is particularly interested in the Wickr news app, as the messenger would offer the industry’s most secure end-to-end encrypted communication technology for messaging, voice and video calls and file sharing.
“The need for this type of secure communication is increasing,” writes Stephen Schmidt, Information Security Officer at Amazon and Web Services (AWS) rolled into one Blog entry. He goes on to explain that with the transition to hybrid work environments, due, among other things, to the COVID-19 pandemic, companies and authorities have a growing need to protect their communications across many remote locations.

Amazon’s interest in messengers like Signal or Wickr would largely reflect the company’s growing desire to open up the area of productivity applications, reports “Business Insider“. In addition to the company’s economic goals, there are also repeated complaints that the so-called “big tech companies” are bowing to the demands of national governments and passing on data from their customers. This leads to an increase in the popularity of smaller messenger services such as Signal or Wickr, which for many users are therefore a sensible alternative to the market leader WhatsApp. –
