Warhammer creator Games Workshop has signed a deal with Amazon, allowing the latter to make Warhammer films and TV series. Henry Cavill and the Vertigo film production company are also involved in Warhammer productions.
Amazon will now take the preliminary steps to making a movie or TV series, such as finding writers. So the holidays aren’t even close to a movie or a TV series yet, according to the Games Workshop press release. Games Workshop expects Amazon to get the rights to make a production within the Warhammer 40,000 universe first, perhaps other Warhammer universes will follow later.
Henry Cavill, known as a former Superman and The Witcher actor, let us know on Instagram be involved in the project. The message reveals that he will take a leading role in what he calls the Warhammer cinematic universe, collaborating with Vertigo. This production company works on the BioShock and Minecraft movies as well as the Horizon TV series, among others.
According to Deadline sources want Cavill to star in a Warhammer 40,000 TV series and possibly a film within this universe. He would also be in talks to become a producer of Warhammer productions.
Warhammer consists of several miniature wargames, including a sci-fi and a fantasy version that have been made into video games. For example, there is the co-op shooter Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and various real-time strategy games have been released, of which Total War: Warhammer III is a recent example. When the first Warhammer TV series or film is expected to appear is unclear. It will likely appear on Amazon’s Prime streaming service.
