LONDON – Interesting facts about jellyfish have been revealed by research conducted recently. Para scientist said that these soft animals apparently have extraordinary learning abilities.
Studies show jellyfish can learn from their past experiences. And what’s more interesting is that jellyfish can change their behavior in response to the past even though they don’t have a central brain.
As compiled from IFL Sciene on Monday (25/9/2023), the findings of this new study reveal that jellyfish are actually much more complex and smarter than previously thought.
When this interesting fact was first discovered, many scientists were surprised, considering this was a very extraordinary thing for an animal with very few nerve cells.
Jellyfish with the fewest nerve cells, for example the box jellyfish (Tripedalia cystophora), do not have a central brain and move with the help of a simple nervous system consisting of only 1,000 cells.
These nerve cells reside in a loose network called a nerve net that is spread throughout their sticky bodies, and helps them sense their environment, detecting changes in temperature, light, as well as physical touch.
Animals with simple nervous systems such as box jellyfish are thought to be capable of only the most basic forms of learning, such as habituation where the animal gets used to changing conditions, such as noise.
More complex learning such as changing behavior in response to past experiences is thought to be far beyond the capabilities of these animals.
