Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Last Wednesday (9/6) the mass media reported about the proliferation of buyers of BTS Meal, a new menu for McDonald’s (McD) fast food restaurant in collaboration with boy band from South Korea, BTS.
In Indonesia, McDonald’s Indonesia has also released a collaboration menu which was immediately greeted enthusiastically by ARMYs or a special call for BTS fans.
Through the official McDonald’s Indonesia Twitter account, the menu has been released starting at 11 last Wednesday. Customers can only order it with food delivery service applications, such as McDelivery, GrabFood, GoFood & ShopeeFood.
It is known, customers cannot buy BTS Meal directly at the restaurant to eat in (dine in) or take away (take away). This is to avoid crowds of shoppers. This is what then triggers a boom in online purchases, where Gojek (GoFood) drivers flock together.
As a result, more than a dozen McDonald’s fast food restaurant outlets in Indonesia were temporarily closed on Wednesday (9/6/2021).
McDonald’s outlets in Jakarta and several other cities have been affixed with closing stickers. At least 13 outlets were observed that were flooded with online food delivery drivers who bought BTS Meal orders.
“We have temporarily closed four of the six McDonald’s outlets in Semarang for several days,” said Fajar Purwoto, head of Semarang’s Satpol PP, quoted by AFP.
“I don’t want Semarang to be in the Covid-19 red zone again,” he added.
Meanwhile Jakarta authorities did not respond to requests for comment. But local media said five shops in the capital were closed due to BTS Meal’s food orders.
BTS Meal is a food package in the form of chicken nuggets, french fries, and drinks, which was first available in Indonesia. These meal packages have been sold in dozens of countries since May 2020.
BTS is a global superstar boyband with millions of fans around the world since their debut in 2013.
Related to this, Sutji Lantyka as Associate Director of Communication for McDonald’s Indonesia, said that his party is very grateful for the great enthusiasm of the community for BTS Meal.
“Regarding the temporary closure of several McDonald’s outlets, the safety and security of consumers and customers is McDonald’s Indonesia’s priority, the closure is done temporarily, in order to avoid crowds of drive thru queues and delivery purchases. We apologize for the inconvenience,” said Sutji in his official statement.
