In ‘The Piano’ amateur pianists show what they have to offer. This also applies to 14-year-old David. Although he loves playing the piano, his classmates are less enamored with David’s hobby. Things got so bad that at one point they broke his wrist, which meant he couldn’t play for a while.
“Then I was quite lucky that they didn’t go any further”
David has been playing the piano for a long time. “Since I was seven, so almost eight years,” he says. His classmates found his love for the instrument and the time he puts into it ‘weird’. “I have had difficulty with it until now, because I was bullied for quite a while because of it. They think in a negative way that I am different from them. So that is a reason to bully me,” he says candidly.
The bullying wasn’t just about nasty words. “It was quite physical. They also broke my wrist once. So I couldn’t play anymore for a while. Then I was quite lucky that they didn’t continue,” he says. His classmates did not understand that David lives for the piano, so he went to another school. “Now I go to a nice school where they take these kinds of things more into account. Many children there do something with music. (…) I feel much more at home there.”
In addition to piano, David also makes other types of music. “I make drill beats“, he says. What are they?”Drill beats are actually beats that are under a rapper. He has written text about that and that text is often quite intense.” It is another way for David to show his musicality. “People think it is more normal if I also make something out of beats than if I just make classical music.” A rapper who used his beats has not yet been able to release the song. “Because he is now in jail. For eleven years.”
In Piano David, logically, shows off his piano skills. The music experts – singer Roel van Velzen, double bassist Dominic Seldis and pianist Daria van den Bercken – are enormously impressed by his Chopin piece. David himself is also satisfied with the end result. “It went very well. I am very happy.”
