Amateur Astronomer Captures Video of Jupiter Being Hit by Space Object

JAKARTA – An amateur astronomer has just captured a video showing Jupiter being suddenly hit by a small space object.

The amateur astronomy account at X, MASA Planetary Log posted a video of the crash that occurred on Aug. 28 at 12:45 a.m. ET, featuring footage showing brief bursts of light from Jupiter attributed to comet or asteroid impacts.

That celestial body was perhaps several tens of meters wide. As it hurtles through the high sky of Jupiter, it crashes into the molecules of the atmosphere quickly causing friction and heating.

The account is also affiliated with the project Organized Autotelescopes for Serendipitous Event Survey (OASES) and systems Planetary Observation Camera for Optical Transient Surveys (PONCOTS).

Another independent observation was made by an amateur Chinese astronomer in the city of Zhengzhou, Henan Province. In fact, this event is not surprising, Jupiter is no stranger to the impact.

As a certified giant, Earth’s strong gravitational pull and its proximity to the main asteroid belt place it in jeopardy.

Launch SpaceMonday, September 4, the most notable previous event, the fragmented fragment of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, collided with Jupiter in 1994, leaving evidence in the atmosphere that astronomers could see for months after.
