“Kim?” Is a meeting with experimental painting, which is still true to the “canvas / oil” component. It finds extensions in the interplay with the exhibition space, atypical frame formats and the interrelationships of the paintings. The visual grammar in the Nordic works consists of color areas or line strokes. Inspired by the psychology of unknown depths, the abstraction of data visualizations in her paintings is endowed with the magic of the “narrative of cabinet of curiosity.” The northern exhibition seeks to become attentive, knowledgeable, knowledgeable, and knowledgeable at the same time. that it is not possible to depict anything truly significant or essentially true at all, “this is how Amanda North ‘s exhibition is described by curator and art theorist Kaspars Vanags.

Eight artists and artists’ associations were nominated for the “Purvītis Prize 2021”: Skuja Braden for the exhibition “Samsāra”, Valdis Celms for the kinetic sculptures “Rhythms of Life” and “Positron”, Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo for the work “ZRwhdZ”, Kaspars Groševs for multimedes installation “Other Room”, Ieva Kraule-Kūna and Elīna Vītola for the project “Artists’ Crisis Center”, Rasa and Raitis Šmiti for the work “Atmospheric Forest”, Aija Zariņa for the solo exhibition “Wake up, wake up once, the free spirit” and Amanda Ziemele for the solo exhibition “Quantum hair implants”.

Continuing the tradition started two years ago, this year the award was presented for the lifetime contribution to art received by Maija Tabaka – for the trust in lifelong painting and maintaining the spirit of figural painting in Latvian art. The decision on which artist to award the prize is made by the organizing committee of the “Purvītis Prize”. The financial amount of the prize is 10,000 euros (excluding taxes).

Meanwhile, in the audience voting organized by the portal “Delfi”, which took place from May 28 to June 9, the artist duo Skuja Braden won with the exhibition “Samsara” at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

Solvita Krese, the head of the Latvian Center for Contemporary Art, describes it as follows: “Skuja Braden ‘s creative activity in the Latvian art scene was a bright, independent and unusual phenomenon, which has become especially noticeable now, in line with world feminist narratives and the renaissance of ceramics as a form of creative thought. In the exhibition “Samsara”, grotesque wires and portraits of contemporaries, skulls vibrating in macabre moods and a parade of moralizing virtues and vices, as well as prostitutes, geishas, dogs and politicians, grouped and condensed with baroque scope and power. not shy away from trivial banalities that at times seem to go beyond good taste. “
