Amanda Gorman and Jan Vogler Collaborate: The Intersection of Music and Poetry

Dresden/New York – Famous overnight – this is a standing term that is used when artists gain popularity overnight with a new work or a special appearance. This applies to few people as much as it does to the American poet Amanda Gorman (25). The cellist and director of the Dresden Music Festival Jan Vogler (59) is now starting to work with her.

On the morning of January 20, 2021, the young, then 22-year-old African-American poet from Los Angeles, who, although she had been named the USA’s first “National Youth Poet Laureate” four years earlier and had already made an appearance at the Library of Congress, was only known to specialists even in the United States. The next day she was world famous.

It was the inauguration day of US President Joe Biden (80), broadcast worldwide.

Hundreds of millions of people witnessed the ceremony and the appearance of Gorman, named the Inaugural Poet, reciting her poem “The Hill We Climb” – verses that portray the United States, its history and present, describe in vivid word pictures from the perspective of an African American woman, a descendant of slaves.

Gorman also made a visual impression on that winter day – in a bright yellow coat, with bright red hair accessories – and not only the bilingual German book edition of the poem quoted the iconic appearance in the illustration on the book cover.

The collaboration between Vogler and Gorman is intended to create a connection between music and poetry.

An interplay of Gorman’s poetry with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, three of his eight cello suites (No. 1, 3, 5), which the cellist recorded for an album ten years ago. The date is February 17th, the venue is the famous Carnegie Hall in Vogler’s adopted home of New York.

Vogler is trained for such an event format; in recent years he has toured with Hollywood actor Bill Murray (73) and the program “New Worlds”, which closely interweaves poetry and music.

Both artists, Gorman and Vogler, are looking forward to the event with great anticipation. “Like many people, Bach’s music captures my heart and my imagination,” Gorman said. “To enter into dialogue with her and with Jan and his cello – an instrument by Stradivarius made at the time when Bach wrote this music – is to touch something timeless.”

Vogler said he grew up reading poetry and has played the music of Bach most of his life, although he has always been deeply interested in the universal appeal of his captivating cello suites.

“It is a great pleasure to work with Amanda and to see how her fascinating poems and inspiring thought-provoking ideas transform my interpretation of Bach’s music.”

If he has his way, the appearance in February shouldn’t be a one-off.

Vogler said he is looking forward to playing this program at Carnegie Hall and is curious “when we can bring the project to Europe.”
