At the recent meeting of the Regional Council, Mr. Amanatidis informed that important steps have been taken towards the agreement and that a crucial meeting is expected on the 10th of the month, which may lead to the final settlement of the issue.
Negotiation Process and Challenges
The Regional Governor underlined the difficulty of the project, as it requires the coordination of many points of view and different approaches. “We have to marry many points of view and different approaches, but we have taken many steps,” he said, highlighting the significant progress achieved in the negotiations. District heating is a critical issue for the region, as it concerns approximately 60% of the residents of Western Macedonia, offering a sustainable and economical heating solution.
The Intervention of PPC and the Reaction of the District Governor
A major point of concern in the negotiation process was the recent move by PPC, which threatened to cut the electricity supply, which caused strong reactions. Mr. Amanatidis described the specific action of PPC as a “mistake”, pointing out that he hopes that the threat of power cut will not be carried out. Despite the difficulties, the Regional Governor emphasized that there is a positive attitude on the part of the government, which is trying to find a definitive solution to the issue of District Heating, in order not to disrupt the provision of services to citizens.
The Text of the Agreement and the Search for Common Ground
Mr. Amanatidis also mentioned that at the moment there is a text that needs to be approved, with the aim of all parties involved reaching a mutually acceptable solution. “We are in a phase where we have a text on which we must make our positive decisions because the matter is very serious,” he stressed. The Regional Governor underlined the importance of unity and cooperation in this difficult period, saying that “in difficult times we must be together”.
Coordination for the Final Proposal
In the context of the negotiation, Mr. Amanatidis assumed the role of coordinator to reach a common recommended proposal, which will be accepted by both the Ministry and PPC. The aim is to ensure the continuation and upgrading of District Heating, which is vital for the quality of life of the residents of the area, especially ahead of winter.
Prospects and Expected Benefits
Solving the District Heating issue will have multiple benefits for the region, ensuring energy security and economic viability for thousands of households. The cooperation between the Region, the government and PPC is considered crucial to ensure a solution that will meet the needs of the citizens and promote the sustainability and efficient use of energy resources.
