Amalia’s birthday party gets out of hand | Inland

It concerns a birthday party on Saturday in the park behind Huis ten Bosch palace, which, according to the Government Information Service (RVD), would have been organized ‘at the last minute’ after festivities previously planned in the palace were canceled due to corona. “Amalia turned 18 last week. An important moment in her life,” the service clarifies.

“All guests have been asked to take a test. All were vaccinated. They have also observed an appropriate distance,” said the RVD. That information comes from the palace itself; the service only knew about the party after De Telegraaf had inquired about it. A clarification follows later that ‘the starting point was that an appropriate distance was kept.’

“The family was convinced with this meeting outside and with the precautions taken to deal with the corona advice in a responsible manner,” according to the RVD.

But this turns out not to be the case. The place where the party was held turns out to be part of the residence of the royal family. “The king has informed the Prime Minister that, on closer inspection, it was not good to organize this in his own park.” According to the RVD, this signal to Rutte relates to the way in which the party is organised, including the number of guests.

The party took place on Saturday under two open canopies that were placed against a house in the palace garden, which had to offer protection against the rain. Sources speak to De Telegraaf about a party where about a hundred people must have attended. The RVD keeps it to 21 invitations, to which not everyone would have turned up. The cabinet’s advice to receive only four people a day also applied last week around the princess’s birthday.

The restrictions have affected many Dutch people in recent months, including many young people who turned 18 and were forced to celebrate their birthday in a limited circle. The government also once again requires a frugal interpretation of the Christmas party from the population, because the group size is not expanded around the holidays. Catering establishments where festive dinners can be organized must also close their doors after five o’clock in the afternoon.

The incident is painful, because the Oranges have often created a fuss about corona in the past two years. A photo surfaced when they violated distancing rules in Greece last summer. The delivery of a capital racing boat, while many Dutch people were affected by financial setbacks from the corona crisis, were equally surprising. The Oranges were also discredited due to an untimely holiday to Greece during corona time. There was a line through it, after commotion arose when the family appeared to have flown while the cabinet gave signals to stay close to home. Prime Minister Rutte qualified the trip, for which he bore ministerial responsibility, as an error of judgment.

Rutte keeps the commentary on the youngest royal slip succinct. “The Prime Minister thinks it is a sensible response from the King,” said a spokesman.
