The mystery of the 5 dead babies in Amaliada and Achaia remains unsolved, with all eyes on the developments that have shocked the local community and beyond.
The 24-year-old mother who has been at the center of discussions and has lost her two children herself, maintains that she is open to research and has no fear.
The files of the case of the death of the babies in Amaliada and Achaia are coming out of the drawers again, reminding many of the case of Roula Pispirigou.
The chronicle of infant deaths in Amaliada, Achaia
In 2021, the then 21-year-old Irene was taking care of her friend’s baby when it started to have difficulty breathing. When he arrived at the hospital he was already dead.
In 2022, her first child, 19 days old, dies of interstitial pneumonia.
In 2023, her second child dies in the “Agia Sophia” hospital and the conclusion that came out in October 2023 attributes the death to the epileptic seizures she suffered. The question is whether there was someone else in the hospital room when the child died.
In 2024, the child dies in Amaliada, which brought the case back to the fore, for whose death there are no answers, only coincidences, according to Vassilis Lambropoulos.
For the fifth case concerning the death of her 24-year-old sister (in infancy), when she was 14, it is claimed on her part that she died of a respiratory infection.
The chilling coincidence in 3 out of 5 dead children
However, new evidence reveals yet another chilling coincidence. Specifically, they seem to show that three out of five children, as LIVE NEWS revealed, are diagnosed with interstitial pneumonitis.
Specifically, it has emerged that 24-year-old Irini’s first baby, the 19-day-old infant who died in June 2022, her friend’s baby in 2021 and Irini’s 1.5-year-old sister in Argos in 2014 died of interstitial pneumonia.
What did 15-month-old Panagiotis die of?
The relatives of 15-month-old Panagiotis who died on August 5 remain in the dark about the cause of his death, as the huge workload at the two laboratories doing histological tests is too much.
According to MEGA, the histological examinations have not even started to be done, they have not been handed over to the competent pathologists in Athens.
For little Panagiotis who died in August, the forensic report states that his death was due to pathological causes.
What is interstitial pneumonitis – It can be caused by inhaling drugs
Konstantinos Douros, professor of pediatric pulmonology, spoke to the MEGA television station about what interstitial pneumonitis is.
“The term is complicated. It is descriptive and does not specify a cause of death. In other words, it shows some damages but these damages are not created by one specific cause but by many. We don’t have the cause. It is a first approach until it reaches the cause. It’s like saying cause of death cardiac arrest but we have to see what it was created from.”
He added that “He could have a pathology and another reason is that he has had a severe infection that has hit the lung. Another reason is sudden death syndrome. There are little babies who sleep and never wake up. Anything that can cause suffocation can lead to it. It can be caused by inhaling any toxic substance or drugs».
The cause of death of the 2nd child of 24-year-old Irene
Within a few months, Irini Bourtzoukou became pregnant again. With the second child she brought into the world, she became – as she says – more attached. The difficulties and the baby’s hospitalization for a month in Hagia Sophia brought them closer together with the young mother recording with her mobile phone every examination the doctors gave her.
“I was taking videos and talking to her because she was a brilliant child. They used to say that in the hospital too. I was taking videos of her to show her when she grows up what I was taking for her,” she has said.
The mother was also present in the last episode of the baby shortly before it ended. Within seconds his heart had stopped. Death was attributed to cardiac arrest probably related to the seizures reported by the mother. Specifically, according to the information of the MEGA television station, drugs compatible with epilepsy medication were found in the blood.
In the same project, the doctors of Agia Sophia were spectators, as they had treated Irene’s sister 9 years ago with the exact same symptoms, who died a few days after her discharge. That’s when the genetic testing that started immediately with the prosecutor’s intervention fell on the table.
“Some are losing weight”
“We see that some people are losing weight. One, two, three, fourth child dies and there they have to start looking for what happened? I’m not saying that it’s criminal activity, but everyone has to do their job”, the honorary president of the N/A Attica police, Giorgos Kalliakmanis, tells MEGA.
“She is not accused, in fact the mother herself says she asked for a genetic test to see what her own children died of but here we have 4 children that the mother, apparently, was present. First the two children were hers. (…) She was holding the baby of a friend of hers, with whom she had a relationship. She left the child with her to go out and the child died in her arms. They say various things there, that when the child’s mother called, the girl said that the child is fine. It is also dependent.”
“There is no suspicion of criminal activity for any of the children”
For her part and referring to the issue, the press representative of the Hellenic Socialist Party, Konstantina Dimoglidou, notes:
“Indictments were filed for all five cases. For the death of 2021, the records do not show anywhere the presence of this woman before the death of the infant. It is only seen in the death of her own children as is completely normal and in the last death that she herself accepts that she was with the baby that ‘ended up’.”
“No one is being questioned, we are not blaming anyone for these deaths. When we talk about babies, scientists should give help to the Police. There was no report from the doctors that any child arrived abused. When medical examiners somehow rule out criminal activity, you understand how difficult it is to determine whether there is a suspicion of criminal activity,” he adds.
“There is no suspicion of criminal activity for any of these children. A prosecutor’s investigation is underway. The prosecuting authorities already have the 5 case files filed by EL.AS. and each child’s history is included in the case files. There is no reason to summon the women again unless an inquiry is ordered,” he adds.
As EINAP president Matina Pagonis says:
“Nobody knows until now what really happened. When someone goes to the hospital everything is recorded, so it will be very easy, since everyone is asking for information now, to go to the hospital and get the information. It’s all recorded.”
