Mexican Amalia Pérez made history again after winning her seventh consecutive Paralympic medal, after winning bronze in the 61-kilogram category of para powerlifting at Paris 2024 on Friday.
In this way, the tricolor weightlifter, who won the gold medal in the last four editions of the Paralympic event (Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020), as well as the silver medals in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, obtained the 14th medal for Mexico in the Parisian event.
This time, the gold medal went to Nigerian Mark Onyinyechi, who set a new world record with 150 kilograms.
Silver went to China’s Jianjin Cui, who lifted 140 kilograms. The Mexican took third place after lifting 130 kilograms in her second attempt, in what was her seventh consecutive participation in a Paralympic event.
“I feel proud to be a role model for women in Paralympic sport, especially in my discipline, Paralympic powerlifting.
“Coming for one more medal was my dream, no matter what color it was. I want to continue making history, to be the athlete with the most medals in the history of this discipline, and that can only be achieved with enthusiasm, discipline, effort, perseverance, but above all with a great passion for this sport,” said the 47-year-old weightlifter.
