To promote scientific vocations among Jaen schoolchildren through theater. With this objective, ‘Landing. An adventure from space ‘, an initiative of the Caja Rural de Jaén Foundation in collaboration with Teatro La Paca that was presented yesterday in the capital. The event was attended by Luis Jesús García-Lomas, manager of the Foundation, Mari Carmen Gámez, director of Teatro La Paca, and Luis García, Telecommunications engineer and scientific advisor to ‘Alunizante’.
“At last this year we can present this theater of scientific dissemination that we had planned in 2020 and that due to the circumstances we could not carry out,” explained García-Lomas, who recalled that the Foundation has been with this project for eight years within its La Rural program Science to instill in children the importance of science in everyday life
This time it is expected to reach some 4,000 schoolchildren in the province. To this end, the recorded theater play will be offered to schools to be reproduced through the La Paca digital platform, as well as didactic material to delve into astronomy, axis of ‘Alunizante’. The premiere and recording of the play will be on March 3 at the Maestro Álvarez Alonso de Martos Theater.
“We are delighted, I would say amazed, that the culture continues despite times of pandemic,” said Mari Carmen Gámez. The director of Teatro La Paca thanked the Caja Rural Foundation for the support received not only now, but also a few years ago with a similar proposal focused on women in science.
‘Alunizante’ is a “fun play that maintains the intrigue” with which children they will travel to the moon. Tomás Afán is the author and Luis García has been in charge of the documentation, while the scenography has been in charge of Carlos Monzón. Luis García, for his part, emphasized the importance of works such as this one to awaken scientific vocations among children and young people. «2021 is the year of selection of astronauts. In Spain we only have Pedro Duque, I think It is time for more young people to decide to bet on being astronauts and works like this are fundamental to awaken the passion, the love for science ”, he pointed out.
The Jaen engineer, who was working at the European Space Agency, sees it necessary promote research and improve the conditions of Spanish scientists since on many occasions they are forced to go abroad to develop their professional careers due to the lack of opportunities here.
