Lucifer – a popular name with flaws
“Last year there were a few inquiries about the name Lucifer or Lucifer,” reports name advisor Rodriguez. For some time now she has been receiving requests about the name again and again. But in this matter, the parents-to-be are biting granite. “We are still of the opinion that we are not issuing a positive report. The name has strong negative associations. But the statistics show that the name is still registered – even if it is an occasional and a middle name. But it is registered.” This is mainly due to the fact that registrars can decide at their own discretion whether to enter names or not.
If there is any doubt as to whether the first name exists or whether it has enough characteristics of a first name, name researcher Rodriguez is called in. She suspects that the television series “Lucifer” is leading to increased interest in the name and the approvals. The name Mazikeen – also a protagonist of the television series – landed on her table last year. In this case, the expert gave the green light. “Because the name is not negatively affected, it was entered quite normally.”

Star Wars names continue to be trendy
The fact that names from series end up on birth certificates is not a new trend – only the names keep changing. According to Rodriguez, there was another small wave of Star Wars last year. The name Amidala has been popular for several years. “75 percent of the names that appear in Star Wars can already be found in people in Germany,” explains the Leipzig name adviser. “Of course there are also names that are completely normal: Finn or Luke are common names.” What is new, however, is the name Rey as a maiden name. It comes from one of the more recent films from the Star Wars universe.

Fantasy series affect naming
The Game of Thrones series is still having an impact today: “You have Sansa, Daenerys, Khaleesi. Those are not names that you can find in the top 30. But they are entered again and again.” Since the series has been running, there have been repeated inquiries about it. In the meantime, names like Khaleesi are quite normal and so common that they can be registered with the naming advice center without further request, says Rodriguez.

Old names in a new form
“The interesting thing about these names is that originally there weren’t any real people who carried that name. They are new names, but if you look at the science fiction names you can see that they all come from old Latin, Greek and Egyptian forms or going back to Sanskrit. ” It is probable that the authors searched in these areas and at least partially made use of the old forms, speculates Rodriguez.
Sansa, a protagonist from the Game of Thrones series, for example, is borrowed from Sanskrit. Likewise, the children’s book hero Atreyu from the Neverending Story. Rodriguez also took care of this name last year. “That is a very old Indian name. And I was amazed that the parents had to have the name confirmed. Because we wrote the reports for it, as we did 20 years ago.”

Manga names for the offspring
Rodriguez reports that there are also names from the animation and manga sector that are still in trend. “There we have, for example, Calzifer, who is a character from an animated film – a fire devil. The name means something like” fire bringer “. He is very close to Lucifer, but doesn’t have the negative associations.” That is why name expert Rodriguez was able to send the parents a positive opinion in this case. The same goes for the name Loki, which has apparently got a new boost from the manga series “Detective Loki”.

Curiosities for the name researcher
According to Rodriguez, the request for the first name Alucard was also quite special last year. The examination showed that the name did not exist before, but that it could be used as a first name. Then Rodriguez noted, “that the name Dracula is read the other way around. To my shame, I have to admit: I only noticed it later.”

Corona does not stop at birth certificates either
In fact, last year at least one little boy was born with the name Corona – although he only bears it as a second name, adds name expert Rodriguez afterwards: “In Germany there are at least 53 women with the female first name Corona and 15 with the name Korona. Both names are rarely registered today and especially in southern Germany or in Catholic areas. The girls are named after the Holy Corona. ” So the name is not new, it originally comes from Latin and means “crown, corolla, wreath”.
However, there were no inquiries from the naming advice center. In principle, the entry of Corona or Korona is possible, “because these names are contained in the International Handbook of First Names, which the registry offices work with,” explains Rodriguez. So it is possible that in a few years we will encounter small coronas again and again.
