African Edtech Startup, AltSchool, Bridges Continent and Europe with Expansion
A rising star in African education technology, AltSchool Africa, has announced its ambitious foray into the European market. This pivotal move follows their participation in the prestigious SuperCharger Ventures accelerator program, culminating in a Demo Day showcasing on December 2, 2024.
With Established Roots
Already operating in more than seven African countries, AltSchool’s European expansion marks a significant leap towards their mission of bringing accessible educational pathways to individuals across continents. "At AltSchool, we believe that talent knows no borders, but opportunity does," states CEO Adewale Yusuf. "Our expanded reach allows us to bring this vision to a region seeking innovative solutions for its workforce."
A Tailored Approach
While AltSchool has already garnered considerable traction in Europe, with the United Kingdom boasting the third-largest user base after Nigeria and Kenya, their strategy for the continent reflects a nuanced approach. Unlike their primarily online model in Africa, AltSchool Europe will adopt a hybrid model, leveraging Malta as a base for in-person engagements and fostering a more immersive experience.
Initial program offerings will focus on high-demand fields such as cloud engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science, equipping individuals with the skills needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Commitment to Academic Rigor
AltSchool distinguishes itself through a strong commitment to providing not only practical skills but also recognized credentials.
“When we launched in 2021, one of our core goals was to offer students not just skills but certifications," Yusuf explains, highlighting the company’s pursuit of international accreditations.
AltSchool secured full accreditation from the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC) in February 2024. They are actively pursuing similar recognition in Malta, working closely with the Maltese Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation.
While AltSchool doesn’t promise guaranteed job placement, their career team remains dedicated to supporting graduates in their job search.
The company’s expansion into Europe reflects a growing trend of African tech startups venturing beyond the continent, leveraging their expertise and innovative solutions to address global challenges. AltSchool’s success in bridging the gap between Africa and Europe paves the way for future collaborations and underscores the transformative power of education in fostering global connectivity and opportunity.
