Twitter is no longer a convenient network for many users
Elon Musk took care of it with his unpopular news, such as subscription or daily limit of displayed posts
We will show you alternatives to the popular social network that are definitely worth trying
In recent weeks and months, more and more users have begun to question how billionaire Elon Musk runs the social network Twitter. He bought it in October 2022 for $44 billion and started introducing unpopular news relatively soon. The last straw for many users is the introduction of a daily limit of displayed posts. So are there functional established alternatives for users to switch to?
The professionally tuned social network LinkedIn, which is managed by the American Microsoft, offers itself as one of the possible successors of Twitter. Here, users can use the classic feed of news and posts, share text, photos, videos, links or even publish formatted text à la article.
A professional network can also work well for leisure surfing
Individual posts can then be liked (there are 6 reactions available), commented on, reshared or sent to someone directly in a message. LinkedIn’s chat function is elaborated in roughly the same way as Twitter – it is not the main content of the network, but you can send a message to someone, attach any image, GIF, or start a video/audio call right away.
LinkedIn also offers a subscription, it costs CZK 759 to 3,129 per month, depending on the chosen tariff. In particular, the subscription extends professional functions, such as viewing user profiles, and your profile is more visible to others with a subscription. Nothing you really need. You won’t find the restrictions you know from Twitter here.
Tumblr
LinkedIn loses a bit in that its user experience can seem complicated to new users. Tumblr, on the other hand, is more reminiscent of Twitter with its simple design. It is a classic microblogging platform where users publish their own texts, short messages, images, memes and the like in the main middle column.
Tumblr has more in common with Twitter than you might think
The classic system of liking, commenting and sharing published posts works here. You can follow your favorite users or ask them directly. As for your profile, you can view it in complete anonymous mode, so you don’t have to enter your real name or surname. This is where Tumblr differs significantly from LinkedIn, where users mostly go by their real name – precisely because of the focus on work.
Even Tumblr has a subscription, because it contains quite a lot of advertising in the main channel of posts. You can avoid them by paying $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year.
Mastodon
Mastodon is seen by many as the only true successor to Twitter. Named after a prehistoric octopus, the network uses the same formulas as Twitter, which is why it’s the first stop for many disaffected Twitter users. Mastodon was only launched in 2016, but saw the biggest influx of users last year, after Elon Musk came to the management.
Posts on Mastodon are called “toots”, again an interjection, as in the case of Twitter
An interesting feature of Mastodon is its decentralized system. It actually allows users to create and host their own communities through open-source software. There are no ads because Mastodon is not dependent on any big company (it is officially registered as a non-profit organization).
The Mastodon platform connects multiple servers, which in many ways can also be considered their own social networks. Each group manages its own server, which is thematically focused and where users with common interests gather.
Reddit has by far the least in common with the social platforms listed above. Nevertheless, it is an interesting alternative, at least for some Twitter users. Reddit follows the culture of Internet forums and the popular 4chen network. In a modern design, it allows creating thematic threads (subreddits) in which users (redditors) can share images, videos, and of course text or links.
Reddit combines modern design with the diversity of Internet forums
Classic liking is absent here, users can rate individual posts – and comments associated with these posts – by voting. The number of positive (upvote) and negative votes (downvote) then determines the relevance of contributions in search and in recommending to other users.
Reddit, like almost every forum, has had its fair share of controversies. The network does not block practically any form of content, so we can find pornography, explicit violent content and the like; I often see Reddit as part of the so-called deep web. Users were also unhappy with the change in pricing for using the Reddit API, which management decided upon after OpenAI used the network to train its ChatGPT language model. Some users have switched their subreddit to private in protest, while others have stopped posting anything on the network until management reverses its decision. This protest action is referred to as the “Reddit blackout”.
