The essential Franco-British singer Ely Beth, real name Laura Dauzat, will perform on stage on September 27 at the Georges Canguilhem media library in Castelnaudary (Aude). A dark and moving repertoire, to be discovered on the listening platforms. Interview.
What is your story?
Ely Beth is a two-year-old project that I do alone in MAO [musique assistée par ordinateur, ndlr] to writing, to composition. This is what I call “sensitive pop”, which will talk about the primary emotions of human beings. It’s a show that I want to base on emotions, which talks about fear, joy, love, death. It’s somewhere basic, but very pure. To give a counter-example, I’m not going to talk about the political situation, I’m going to turn to simple emotions.
Where does this inspiration come from?
About why I started making music, about twenty years ago. For myself, to “save” myself, so to speak, or to deal with those emotions when they come upon us as teenagers. We don’t really know what to do with them. I thought music was a beautiful way to transcend that, to make something scary into something beautiful.
How do you describe your musical world?
Quite dark, sensitive and moving.
Why did you adopt the stage name ofEly Beth ?
Elisabeth is my middle name. I am Franco-British, and it was chosen as a very subtle reference to the former Queen of England (Laughs). It’s the first name that connects me to England, I transformed it into a stage name.
You will soon be performing in Castelnaudary. How will your concert take place?
It takes place in a media library, so it will be an acoustic show. I will be accompanied by a musician, Jean-Baptiste Azanza, who is a double bass player. I will accompany myself on the guitar and the cello. It will be a repertoire in English, since I have an affinity with this language. I found that the music I made sounded better in English. Because the voice is an instrument like any other, and there is a story of sound.
Are there any singers in particular who have pushed you to make music? Or are they a source of inspiration?
The very first one who made me understand that music could be a vector of important things was Eminem. I discovered “pop music” with him. Before, I listened more to Laurie or Billy Crawford (Laughs). Billie Eilish too, she’s a leading figure in the music I want to make. Or Sevdaliza, who just released her song “Alibi” which was a real success. I’ve been following her for years, she’s in this same aesthetic. Until now, she was unknown to the battalion except for people who are looking to listen to this kind of musical style. It’s a niche universe, pop is very popular but the pop that I make is alternative and dark. So, it’s proof that this aesthetic is making a place for itself and speaks to people.
Concert on Friday, September 27, at the Georges Canguilhem media library, starting at 7 p.m. Duration: one hour. Free admission.
