Shortly after the city of New York declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus, the alternate parking rules were suspended, but as of this Monday the rules go into effect and drivers will have to move their vehicles.
“I agree with all the laws but the situation we are in is not because they are charging a parking, when everyone knows that there is not here parking. A car is standing there, it is not working, that one can keep leaving it standing there until things become normal, “explains a neighbor.
The rules will temporarily resume for one week. The city’s Sanitation Department will resume sweeping the streets and during those days it will be evaluated when the next cleaning will be scheduled, which could restart on June 7.
For drivers like José Valerio, who lives in Washington Heights, this has been of great benefit since he has not had to worry about receiving a fine: “I have benefited, I have not had to move the car. I have benefited a lot from it. It should last until we finish the pandemic. “
According to a report from the city comptroller, the largest category of fines are parking tickets, and each year the city raises hundreds of millions of dollars.
This week, the rules are suspended on Thursday, for Ascension Day, but the parking meters will be in effect.
The alternate parking rules will be suspended again on May 24 for the celebration of Memorial Day. To receive updates on these rules during the crisis, register on the website: nyc.gov
