Chen Xiuxi, a professor at National Taiwan University’s School of Public Health, said today that international vaccinations have stagnated, and more and more people are choosing not to vaccinate. At present, the cumulative injection rate of supplementary doses in the world has stagnated at around 34%, but the academic circles have found that in addition to increasing immune protection, vaccines still have alternative benefits for the protection of co-morbidity deaths and long-term new crowns.
Chen Xiuxi led a research team today to analyze the international COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) epidemic trend through the “New Coronary Pneumonia Epidemic Prevention Science Online Live”. He mentioned that as COVID-19 is gradually becoming “influenza”, people in all countries have neglected vaccination. At present, the cumulative administration rate of supplementary doses in the world has stagnated at around 34%, entering a “flat period”.
Chen Xiuxi believes that vulnerable groups and people who have the opportunity to come into contact with the elderly should still consider vaccination. He mentioned that the deaths caused by COVID-19 include direct deaths caused by severe illness and comorbid deaths caused by complications after infection. The study found that the effectiveness of vaccines in reducing the death of co-morbidities is 47% for all age groups, and the effect is as high as 71% for the elderly group over 65 years old.
Insufficient medical energy during the epidemic can also lead to indirect death of asymptomatic or uninfected people. The research team estimated that the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine in reducing indirect deaths was 41%.
In addition, chronic sequelae may develop after infection with COVID-19, that is, Long COVID. Citing international research, Chen Xiuxi pointed out that vaccination with the basic dose of the vaccine can reduce the risk of developing a new crown by 51%, and the supplementary dose can reduce the risk of developing a new crown by 70%. Studies have shown that the risk of pulmonary embolism, arrhythmia, and ischemic stroke in patients with COVID-19 is much higher than that of uninfected groups, which is worth noting.
Chen Xiuxi said that the economy is gradually recovering in the “post-epidemic era”. Governments of all countries are concerned about the issue of vulnerable groups returning to the workplace. They suggest that precise vaccines be administered to prevent subsequent unemployment and economic distress caused by disability.
