‘Also use shorter test sticks for children at the GGDs’

The GGDs should all use shorter test sticks to check children up to and including primary school age as gently as possible for the corona virus. The shorter rod is already in full use in hospitals. That says Károly Illy, the chairman of the Dutch Pediatric Association (NVK) in response to an article in the AD.

It states that some GGDs already use this short bar. The use of these children’s rods offers sufficient certainty about possible infections, says Illy. “You sometimes miss one, but it concerns a child with so little virus that it does not pose any risks for another.”

Because it is so important that everyone is tested for a suspected infection and children do not have to be afraid, these few and quite innocent mistakes should be accepted, Illy thinks

He compares the feeling that a short stick produces with that of picking the nose. In hospitals, sucking pads are also used on a limited scale for small children, but these are not very useful in practice. The saliva obtained in this way has to be checked very quickly and that is not always possible.
