Also Prime Minister New Zealand not to speak about Christchurch film: “Much too fast and numb” | Movie

FilmNew Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern criticized plans for a film about the Christchurch massacre on Monday. A total of 51 people were killed in the shootings in several mosques in 2019. Another 40 people were injured.

The planned film was supposed to be about Ardern’s response to the attacks, but according to the prime minister, the project is ill-timed and focuses on the wrong topic. According to her, the terror attack is still too fresh in the minds of many residents of New Zealand. Earlier, an employee of the prime minister already announced that Ardern is not involved in the film.

Question marks about timing

“As I see it personally, it feels like very fast and very numb to New Zealand,” Ardern told TVNZ on Monday. “And while there are tons of stories that need to be told at some point, I don’t consider mine one of them. It is the stories of the community, the families,” said the prime minister.

New Zealand Muslims reacted with shock to the plans last week. The spokesman for a Muslim organization in the Canterbury region, where Christchurch is located, also questioned the timing. A petition to stop production has now been signed more than 58,000 times.

Ardern received much praise for her response to the massacre. The role of the New Zealand Prime Minister is to be played by Australian actress Rose Byrne. According to trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter, the film would be called ‘They Are Us’, which is taken from a speech by Ardern after the attacks.
