From Sunday, November 15, everyone who keeps chickens or other poultry must house or shield the animals. This rule already applied to companies, but is now also being introduced for private individuals. This obligation to house comes after an infection with bird flu in a bird sanctuary in Ostend.
Since 1 November, stricter measures have already been in force in our country for professional poultry and hobby keepers. These measures came after several bird flu infections in wild birds and poultry in the Netherlands were found at the end of October.
On Friday, employees of a bird rescue center in Ostend determined that three wild birds were infected with the H5N8 avian flu virus, the federal food safety agency (FAVV) reports Saturday. It was then decided to extend the housing obligation to poultry from private individuals. Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease to which all bird species are likely to be susceptible.
