The Dutch Red Cross was also hit by the extensive cyber attack on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). According to the national branch of the aid organization, the affected systems contained data from at least 4600 people who asked for help from the Dutch Red Cross.
The ICRC reported the cyber attack a week ago. The attack was aimed at servers containing data and confidential information. The data of 515,000 vulnerable people may have been stolen.
This concerns, for example, refugees and people who are looking for relatives who have lost sight of a disaster, conflict situation or detention. The data comes from at least 60 Red Cross Societies worldwide.
It now appears that this data also includes the data of 4600 people who asked the Dutch Red Cross for help, so-called help seekers. According to the aid organization, this concerns at least names, dates of birth, country of origin and names of parents.
The Red Cross says it will inform those affected as soon as possible. A report has also been made to the Dutch Data Protection Authority. No information was stolen from volunteers or donors.
It is still unclear who is behind the cyber attack and what the possible motive is. According to the ICRC, there is no indication that the information on the servers has been further leaked or shared.
