FILM AND ANNIVERSARIES
Exactly 50 years ago – on November 23, 1970, on Thanksgiving Day – the US Coast Guard went to a meeting with the Soviet ship “Sovetskaya Litva”, which was anchored off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. The aim was a bilateral meeting to discuss fishing rights in the Atlantic. While the talks were in full swing, Sims Kudirka jumped on the American ship “The Vigilant” (English – Modrais) in a desperate desire for freedom. To his horror, after seven hours of freedom, the Americans extradited the fugitive to the Soviet Union, causing outrage in the world media, as the fugitive was beaten unconscious and his future life promised no hope. And so it would have ended if an American ship’s sailor, a Latvian by descent, had not reported the incident to the US media the next day.
Eyewitness stories, unique archive footage and reconstructions of Sima Kudirka’s own dramatic events, which turned 90 this year, form the plot of the documentary thriller “Leap”, which will lead the viewer in an exciting cinematic adventure.
