Cardarelli Hospital in Campobasso, the situation of internal contagion worsens. After the Surgery cluster, which on Saturday recommended – at the explicit request of the UOC director – the closure of the department, an outbreak breaks out in Medicine.
It all started yesterday afternoon after 6 pm when a patient who had to be discharged was subjected to the swab. Before sending him home, as per hospital protocol, he underwent molecular tests to avoid the risk that he could have contracted the virus. The confirmation came from the molecular biology laboratory: positive. Unfortunately it is not the only one, as evidenced by the results of the swabs made on medical, nursing and hospitalized staff.
According to internal and documented sources, 5 patients tested positive this morning in Medicine. To this number we must add another 4 patients, also from Medicine, already ascertained in recent days, plus 2 nurses and 2 doctors. And not only. Then there are the 9 Medicine patients supported in Surgery in recent days because there was no room and who had already been subjected to a swab. In total there are 22 positives attributable to the Medicine ward, which add up to the 24 attributable to Surgery (the total number of positives of this outbreak is currently 33, but it is a number that also includes the 9 patients transferred to the ward from nearby Medicine in recent days) . Now Medicine too risks being closed to new hospitalizations, with all the consequences of the case.
The separate paths, on whose existence yesterday in the hearing the general manager Oreste Florenzano guaranteed, did not prevent, according to the reconstruction of Cardarelli doctors who are experiencing hours of anguish and anger, the contagion spreading in the ward. Probable risk factor is the very fact that doctors go around the wards because, in the current situation, patients are “scattered”.
