In many places in the Alps it is mild for the time of year. It also rains heavily here and there. The snow line goes up to 1,800 meters in many places. Nevertheless, there is a nice run-up to the Christmas holidays.

On Monday and earlier on Tuesday, the temperature was above freezing in many places in the Alps, including at an altitude of 1,500 meters. In the next 24 hours, the snow line will increase to around 1,800 meters, the frost line will even go to 2,000 meters.

“It will rain heavily in the coming hours, even at high altitudes. This rain, in combination with melt water, can cause nuisance and perhaps even avalanches,” Weerplaza warns. The French Alps in particular experience rain.

From Wednesday evening the weather will change and the cold air will return. “With a northerly flow, the chance of snow in the valley will also increase again from Thursday,” the weather service says. This is particularly the case in Switzerland and Austria. From the second half of this week it will remain several degrees below zero at 1,500 meters.

From next weekend, a large part of Europe will experience a high-pressure area. “This produces good conditions in the Alps, which are just on the right side of the high-pressure area. There, despite sunny conditions, it remains cold winter weather.”

Finally, according to Weerplaza, there are signals that a new cold front will bring more snow on the north side of the Alps during the last days before Christmas.
