Yule leaves as leader – Noel wins in Chamonix before two surprises

For the first time in almost two years, Daniel Yule has been eliminated in a World Cup slalom. The Valais failed in Chamonix after setting the best time in the first run.

The victory went to the Frenchman Clément Noël, who triumphed in his home race and won the sixth World Cup, the third this winter. Noël won ahead of Norwegian Timon Haugan and Austrian Adrian Pertl, who were both on the podium for the first time.

Ramon Zenhaeuser was the best Swiss after Yule’s fifth out. There were also points for Loïc Meillard (13th) and Reto Schmidiger (15th).

Everything seemed to have been done for Daniel Yule, who had already shown in Madonna and Adelboden that he had the mental strength to turn a half-time lead into a win. But this time the 27-year-old did not get through. The last time Yule left Kranjska Gora was in March 2018. He slipped in the top part of the second run, which also gave him the great chance to take the lead in the Slalom World Cup. In this classification Henrik Kristoffersen held the front, even though the Norwegian – he already in the first run – retired.

In addition to Yule, the tricky second run of Chamonix also left the Italian Stefano Gross and Frenchman Alexis Pinturault on the track. At halftime these two had been third and fourth behind Yule and Nöel. Ultimately, two young drivers, Norwegian Timon Haugan and Austrian Adrian Pertl, were on the podium for the first time. They had both started the race with numbers over 30.

Ramon Zenhäusern also benefited from the failures. For the fifth time this winter, the man from Upper Valais placed in the top 5. He only managed the podium once during this time, as second in Zagreb. (Abu / SDA)
