Corinne Suter, the Speed Queen. “That’s not what I call myself,” she says.

As a child, Corinne Suter had only one goal: she wanted to be faster on skis than her three brothers Andreas, Alex and Dario. She did it. And so it happened that a colleague asked her if she also wanted to join the ski club. But Suter hesitated. Sure, she also drove youth ski races. But she preferred to let off steam on the slopes of Ibergeregg and Handgruobi. «Just for fun. That was the greatest. Nevertheless, one day I agreed to join the Schwyz Ski Club. »

Almost 20 years later, the little girl who let off steam in the snow became the fastest woman in the world. After the crystal ball for the Downhill World Cup, Suter also wins those in the Super-G early. This is because the World Cup final in Cortina (It) was canceled due to the coronavirus epidemic. “It is a pity that the season ends so abruptly. It is not a proper conclusion. But you also have to realize that it is now too risky to race in Italy, »said Suter.

«At first I didn’t check it»
She could not even realize that she got both crystal balls straight away. “Actually, the FIS didn’t want to make the decision until Saturday,” she says. Right. But because the Italian Ski Association is not holding still, the report seeps through on Friday evening. «I got more and more congratulations messages on my cell phone. At first I didn’t check it out. Only when my trainer called me was I sure. I’m so happy.”

Suters creates something historical. She is the first Swiss woman since Michela Figini in 1987 to win the Double Downhill and Super-G. She is the new speed queen! “I don’t call myself that,” she says with a smile. Nevertheless, she is proud of herself. “I did not get the ball as a gift, but gave it 100 percent in every race and fought to the end.”

The happiness of the brave
In fact, she wasn’t worse than six in any of the six Super-Gs – Suter even won that of Garmisch (De). An impressive record. And she has the luck of the hard-working. Why? Because at the last race in La Thuile (It) her competitor Federica Brignone was only one hundredth missing from victory. If the Italian had been a blink of an eye faster, Suter would have lost the ball.

But the subjunctive doesn’t count in sports. Not even in ski racing. Suter is the speed queen!
