The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso suffered an accident on Thursday. As his racing team Alpine announced, the Spaniard was involved in a traffic accident while cycling in Switzerland. Alonso was conscious and in good shape. The 39-year-old should be further medically examined on Friday.
Alpine, the former Renault team, announced that it would not provide any further information for the time being. There will be more updates on Friday. Alonso is a passionate cyclist. After a break, the man from Oviedo will start this season for Formula 1 Team Alpine alongside Frenchman Esteban Ocon.
Alonso’s start at the season opener wobbles
As the Italian newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” wrote, Alonso was hit by a car while he was training on his bike near Lugano. The 2005 and 2006 world champion was immediately taken to a local hospital. The “Gazzetta” reported that the Spaniard had broken his jaw and knocked out some teeth, and questioned Alonso’s start at the start of the season at the end of March.
