Alpine: Mikaela Shiffrin crashed in Cortina’s downhill race

Shiffrin herself has posted on social media that she will miss next week’s competition in Kronplatz, Italy.

“Thank you all for the support and well wishes. I will take it day by day and share more information as soon as I know more,” Shiffrin writes, among other things.

The accident happened after barely 20 seconds. Shiffrin flew far on a jump and slid into the safety net.

After being treated by paramedics, Shiffrin stood up, but was unable to support her left leg as she made her way off the hill.

Shiffrin was examined at a hospital after the crash and according to the American Federation, the initial examination shows that the cruciate ligament and ligaments are intact.

The boyfriend crashed earlier

The American star has 95 career World Cup victories and leads the overall World Cup standings heading into today’s race.

Shiffrin’s boyfriend, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, crashed badly less than two weeks ago.

Shiffrin wasn’t the only one struggling in the upcoming Olympic race. With starting number eleven, Corinne Suter landed wrong on the same jump as the American and screamed out her pain. The Swiss left the competition area by helicopter.

The competition was won by Austrian Stephanie Venier ahead of Lara Gut-Behrami. Third place was shared between Valerie Grenier, Christina Ager and Sofia Goggia. The only Swedish rider, Lisa Hörnblad, crashed out early in the race.
